Easily one of the best and most interesting shows (or at least second sets) of the year. The first set is well played though truly unspectacular in song selection (Alabama > Greatest is a fine combo, sure, but boy was it overplayed in the early eighties!), save Althea. The second set, though, begins with a huge Help > Slip > Franklin’s. This one, though plenty psychedelic, has kind of a raunchy edge to it. A rare second-set Let It Grow keeps the energy swirling, and He’s Gone gives birth to a nice long pre-Drums jam. The post-Space occasions more exclamation points on the J-card, with a jammy Wang Dang Doodle (not rare in the second set then—it had only recently debuted, and been played once in each set—but “rare” for Act II in retrospect, if one thinks anachronistically), an all-time Dew (!) and an Around that for once makes Sugar Magnolia a second choice (high praise indeed given the quality of this Sugar Mag).
